Logotherapy, sometimes referred to as Franklian psychology, has been called the “third Viennese school,” after Sigmund Freud’s school of psychoanalysis and Alfred Adler’s school of individual psychology (Freud, Adler and Frankl were Jewish, all three lived in Vienna, and for a time Adler lived across the street from Frankl’s birth home). Frankl wrote the celebrated Holocaust testimony Man’s Search for Meaning and is widely known as the founder of logotherapy/existential analysis, which is a form of existential counseling. ![]() ![]() Sendak starts the book off with a very informative Introduction that explains how Hoffman's story got mixed up with a tale by Alexandre Dumas to become the popular tale told in the ballet we know today. ![]() But I cannot compare it to the abridged version everyone is more familiar with. I *have* seen some Christmas movies which featured a girl who was in the ballet and have a very basic knowledge of the story from that, so I was very interested to finally read the original story. The heart of the story to me is the moment when Guy, his son Kit and the visiting friends are standing around the bonfire that they have just lit. Part of the story talks of how Guy deals with his fear of the disease, which is partially autobiographical as Iain Banks himself died of cancer only weeks before ‘The Quarry’ (which was his 27 th novel), was published. The owner of the house, Guy, is dying of cancer and his only son, Kit, aged 17, is the narrator of the story. In his final novel ‘The Quarry’ Iain Banks writes about six old friends who have a reunion in a crumbling house at the edge of a quarry. This is the grain of truth that sums it all up.’ The point where you feel ‘This is what I really have to say here.
